Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of BUNN ST Velocity Brew 10-Cup Thermal Carafe Home Coffee BrewerCustomer Review: Best coffee I've ever brewed Summary: 5 Stars
Before I made this purchase I read just about all of the reviews here. The overwhelming majority of them are very, very positive - glowing, you might say - as they should be. These reviews are trustworthy and I see no need to repeat what they say.
I was given pause by the occasional negative review until I noticed it was typically written by someone who, for example:
- had actually used a percolator (other than while on a cattle drive) and been happy with it;
- uses Maxwell House/Folger, etc., coffee;
- uses ANY pre-ground coffee;
- claims they have to use "twice" the amount of coffee than before;
- grinds their beans the night before to "save time" and has used their prior brewer's timer feature to make the coffee before they awake;
- would leave their glass carafe on the warmer base after the brewing stops for any more than seconds before pouring the coffee into a thermal carafe;
- rates this product is a one-star "disappointment" because "the carefe (sic) platform is not heated" and there is "no guage (sic) to tell how many cups of coffee you are making"; and
doesn't seem to have read or comprehended anything whatsoever beforehand about the well-advertised size, physical characteristics and capabilities of the product, etc., etc., and still wants to knock it.
If you're really interested in producing a great cup of coffee, these negative reviews should not delay/deflect you from buying this brewer. Maxwell House? Percolator? Please.
Since the late 1960's when I first began to appreciate the pleasures of brewing and drinking coffee using a variety and combination of freshly roasted beans, a Braun blade grinder just before brewing and the Chemex drip system, I've always been open to improving my techniques.
My current coffee bar consists of the Bunn STX, a Rancilio Rocky Doserless burr grinder (burr is the only way to go, but that's another story), a Rancilio Silvia espresso machine, a Zojirushi thermal carafe for keeping the coffee hotter, longer (NOTHING can compete with a glass vacuum thermos), an OXO digital scale for precision dosing and an old Melior French Press for "instant" coffee. I've roasted my own beans using an iRoast2, but I know I'm better off leaving that to the pros with their high-end equipment. I'm presently on a monthly subscription service for the Kicking Horse Three Sisters and Kick Ass Dark beans offered here. I've always had my coffee black, except for the occasional Irish Coffee and Cappuccino.
The Bunn replaced a Cuisinart DCC-1200 which was adequate, but not as good as the earlier Brauns and Krups.
I'm willing to invest time, effort and a few bucks to get good results. If you are also, the Bunn STX will be worth it (in the +/-$155.00 range).
As for the possible wastefulness of the Bunn's emblematic "always on" feature to insure a fresh pot is only minutes away, this is what I've found. According to my Kill A Watt meter over a 72 hour period, which included three brewing cycles, the Bunn consumed 2.41 kWh. For me, at the current $.17 per kWh that's about $.14 per day (or $50.00 per year). Not a big deal. When the Bunn is converting cold water to the proper temperature, it consumes +/-700 watts for 10-12 minutes, then it consumes a constant +/-30 watts to maintain the temperature so you can get the thrill of making a pot in 3-4 minutes. If I were making multiple pots per day, I'd keep it on.
Because I'm not and it only takes 10-12 minutes to bring the Bunn up to temp, I'm staying green and keeping it off using the "vacation" switch. I considered using an appliance timer (when I was first reading the reviews), but here's what I'm doing now first thing in the AM: fill the carafe with cold, Britta-filtered water and pour it into the brewer (reminding myself to keep the lid open); turn the vacation switch to "back home"; fill the carafe with hot water, cap it and set it aside; put in a filter, grind (at a medium setting - 25 on the Rocky - same as the 12-cup Cuisinart) and weigh 45 grams of coffee (proportionally a little less than the Cuisinart) and dump it in the the basket (again reminding myself to keep the lid open). Then, I take my dog out. Upon our return, I see (actually, hear) if the Bunn is still heating up (the noise some people talk about is only present for the last few minutes of the heating process). If it's good to go (and it will be), I pour the hot water out of the carafe, cap it and put it under the basket, close the lid and in 3-4 minutes I have a truly great cup of coffee. Every time.
I thought some of the most glowing reviews might be hyperbole, but my first taste immediately told me they weren't. Smoother, more tasty and complex than ever, and no bitterness whatsoever. I've been using washed, dried and ground eggshells in the mix since c. 1975, and my coffee has never been what you'd call bitter but the Bunn has taken this to new levels.
To anyone out there who claims they are producing a bad (e.g., "thin," "tasteless," "nasty," "weak," "anemic," "terrible") pot of coffee with this brewer: sorry, it's not the Bunn, it's you. If you can't or won't buy quality beans, grind them in the proper manner, quantity, consistency (and be willing to experiment until you get it right - this is true for any grinding/brewing system), you should probably stick with Maxwell House in your percolator or whatever you have previously used and liked.
I do have one complaint about the Bunn STX: the coffee is so good I'm drinking more than I should.
