Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of BUNN NHB-W Professional 10-Cup Coffeemaker, WhiteCustomer Review: Consistently Good Coffee Summary: 5 Stars
The main purpose of my acquisition of the Bunn NHB was the continuance of my tireless search for a coffee maker that will consistently make excellent coffee with minimum effort. Simply stated, I wanted the taste to complement the smell of freshly ground coffee beans. I think my search has ended.
Although I don't drink coffee every day, I insist on a good cup of coffee when I do. In pursuit of this goal I have purchased the `best' coffee makers on the market, ranging from such exotic machines as the Hamilton Beach BrewMaster (no decanter) and a French Press. I drink my coffee black without any ingredients that could possibly interfere with the flavor of the beans. I use only the finest coffee beans, which I store in air tight glass containers in the fridge before grinding prior to use. The beans are organically grown and the caffeine is removed utilizing the Swiss Water Process (SWP). I carefully measure the water and beans and routinely clean the machine. Recently I have started to filter the water. By employing these methods I have, from time to time, successfully made a good cup of coffee. But, for some unexplained reasons, other cups taste bitter, strong, weak or bland. It was after making a particularly bitter cup of coffee with my French Press recently that I decided to go to a local restaurant for lunch to help ease my sorrows. Not before, however, giving my old coffee maker a proper burial in the back yard prior to my exit.
At the restaurant a waitress served me a cup of coffee. It was wonderful! She used a Bunn, of course. She didn't know and probably wouldn't care less if she did about the procedures I had undertaken in the pursuit of the perfect cup of coffee. She just routinely poured the perfect cup of coffee from the decanter into the cup. It was this lesson that made me wonder why I was wasting my time employing fruitless preparation procedures prior to using inadequate coffee makers.
I have come to realize (finally) that it's a good idea to acquire appliances that comply with industry standards and are used continually. After all, businesses don't have the time or resources to use equipment that is sub-par and that does not fully satisfy their customers. So it is no coincidence that the vast majority of restaurants and café shops use Bunn coffee makers. Applying this same logic, I have also recently purchased a commercial-type blender that is very popular in restaurants. Of course these products are more expensive; they're American made of superior design using better parts to last longer. If I had only realized this before, I could have saved money by not initially purchasing inadequate appliances.
I agree with most positive reviews presented here and will not extend this review by confirming their observations. I just fail to understand why it is so difficult for other coffee maker manufacturers to copy the Bunn decanter design that pours without leaking.
Also, the decanter lid does not seem to fully seat flat on the decanter and seems to float in mid-air. But this does not affect operation. I suspect the requirement for a drip-free design doesn't allow a ridge on the decanter rim that could have secured the lid better.
The instructions state that water in the reservoir will evaporate over time if the machine is not used frequently enough and that, if this should happen, additional water should be added. But I don't understand how I would know if this situation had occurred or, if so, how much water should be added. Since there is no sight gauge on the tank and the top does not remove, I don't know how I could determine the water level. I'm guessing that, if the decanter should only fill to the five cup level after pouring into the tank water for ten cups, that it would be necessary to add more water for another five cups of coffee. Does this make sense?
Since I do not drink coffee every day I turn on the Vacation switch when the machine is not in use for a few days and turn it back to Active mode when I'm ready to make a fresh pot. So having the water constantly heated 24/7 is not an issue with me.
You cannot stop the brewing process prior to its completion in order to pour a cup of coffee without making a real mess. There is no shut-off device to stop the drip process when the decanter is removed. This is only a minor inconvenience since the time to brew 10 cups is only 3 minutes away.
The Vacation switch is not illuminated, as I believe it is meant to be. But maybe I'm mistaken here. Although there is no mention in the manual about an illuminated switch, I thought I briefly saw a flash of light in the switch as I proceeded to move it from Vacation mode to Active mode. I presume the flash was the demise of the bulb in the switch. Anyway, no big deal.
But these negative remarks are minor and do not detract from the performance of a fine machine. Buy it!
